uel retailers can adopt EMV chip technology at their
pumps and offer tap to pay by turning on EMV
EMV chip adoption is the ;rst step in improving
payment security and creating a streamlined, consistent
consumer checkout experience.
The nationwide shift to EMV chip, the global standard for integrated circuit cards,;point-of-sale (POS)
terminals;and automated teller machines set by Europay,
Mastercard and Visa, of;cially began nearly four years ago.
Since then, the U.S. has experienced signi;cant progress
with EMV migration: 99.7% of credit spend and 97% of
debit spend have occurred on EMV cards. For merchants
that completed the EMV chip upgrade, counterfeit fraud
for card present (CP) transactions decreased 80% from
September 2015 to September 2018. Merchant liability for
these counterfeit transactions decreased 100%.
The automated fuel dispenser (AFD) EMV liability shift
date is Oct. 1, 2020. Fuel retailers that upgrade their AFDs
to EMV technology will realize the security bene;ts.
HOW TO TAP TO PAY
1. Look. Check your card for
the contactless indicator
and the merchant’s checkout
terminal for the contactless
symbol.
2. Tap. When prompted, tap
your card on the contactless
symbol.
3. Go. Once you get payment
con;rmation, you’re successful.
Tapping to pay uses short-range wireless technology to make
secure payments between a contactless card or payment-enabled
device and a contactless-enabled
checkout terminal.
When you tap your card
near the contactless symbol, your payment is sent for
authorization.
IS TAPPING TO PAY SECURE?
Yes. Just like chip cards, each
transaction is accompanied by a
one-time code that protects your
payment information.
To make a payment, your
contactless card must be placed
within one or two inches of the
contactless symbol on the checkout terminal for the sale to take
place (so you can’t pay accidentally). If you tap twice, you won’t be
charged twice.
