UST CORROSION IS NEARLY EVERYWHERE
Recently completed research from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) con;rms
what PEI members have been reporting for years:
Corrosion in underground storage tank (UST)
systems storing ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) is a
widespread and growing problem in the U.S.
The EPA’s ;nal research report also adds new
data, recommendations and advice that affect PEI
members and diesel fuel marketers.
Anecdotal reports of corrosion in various parts
of diesel fueling systems began surfacing shortly
after the 2006 introduction of ULSD, which
reduced the allowable sulfur content in on-road
diesel fuel from 500 parts per million (ppm)
to 15 ppm.
These early reports soon were followed by
several industry studies that provided additional
de;nition and data.
In 2010, PEI sponsored a simple, ;ve-question
survey of tank owners, service providers, fuel
suppliers and related stakeholders. Among other
