PEI Journal: Tell me about Mid-South Steel Products.
Underwood: Our company was
founded in 1954 as a spin-off of a
tank company out of Kentucky.

;rst salesman, and by 1957, he
was able to borrow a bit of money
and start buying the company. We
were the ;rst Tokheim distributors in
Missouri, and as a company we have
We actually started as a tank
manufacturer in 1954, and that year
all we did was sell tanks. But my dad
had the foresight to look at all of
the other things that go along with
tanks: the hoses and nozzles and
dispensers. We kind of grew into the
distributor side of our business. We
have continuously grown since our
founding. Since 1988, we have probably increased 400 or 450 percent in
revenue. In the past 12 to 15 years,
we have grown about 65 percent.
We added a branch in Spring;eld 12
years ago, which helped.
PEI Journal: How did you get

I was going to school and came
into the company full time when I
got back from Vietnam in 1968. I
started as a sales guy. My dad retired
in 1987, and my brother, Ron, and
I have been running the company
