DEF marketers can access three DEF sources to meet
current and future DEF usage requirements:
a. Large, reputable North American urea chemical
companies that produce DEF directly.
b. Dilution facilities that produce DEF, including those
of large North American DEF marketers (three
companies account for more than two-thirds of DEF
deliveries in North America). These facilities
purchase railroad car quantities of urea liquor ( 50
percent pure urea, 50 percent pure water) from the
large urea chemical companies. The facilities dilute
the purchased urea liquor with pure water to pro-
duce 50,000-gallon batches of DEF under tightly
controlled production standards using outside
chemical lab testing to ensure the products meet
ISO2224-1 Table 1 Standards.
c. Other North American facilities that produce DEF
in 2,000- to 5,000-gallon batches. These facilities
usually start production by purchasing DEF “prilled
urea” from large Chinese chemical companies.
Then, they dilute it with pure water to produce DEF.
6. DEF spillage incidents at diesel fueling sites are
increasing rapidly, according to high-volume truck stops
with trench drain or oil/water separator (OWS) systems.
The urea from DEF spillages is contaminating the diesel
fuel spillages captured by OWS systems, inhibiting
normal phase separation. The result is OWS-captured
diesel fuel spillage that is not reclaimable.
DEF FUELING SITE SUPPLIER QUALIT Y SOLUTIONS
Locating a DEF marketer based solely on lowest
delivered cost per gallon is not enough — purchase DEF
only from marketers that meet these considerations:
1. The American Petroleum Institute (API) Diesel
Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Certi;cation Program. API
charges an annual fee to certify and monitor quality
characteristics of the DEF products produced and sold
by DEF marketers. Marketers that satisfy requirements
may be licensed to display the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Certi;cation Mark. To renew for the next year,
