“We got the information from the business broker and the
process started,” Lynn Fry said. “We made an offer in 2009,
but it didn’t work out at that time. We were still on the search
for something when one day in early 2010, Mark got updated
;nancials from the business broker and we decided to put in
another offer, which the owner accepted immediately.”
The Frys closed on the deal in November 2010.
Suddenly, they owned RSSE Inc., a company that performs sales and service of fuel equipment, industrial air compressors, automobile lifts and lube equipment, in addition
to maintenance and construction. With the acquisition also
came clients: major oil companies, oil jobbers, car dealers
and state and local governments.
Mark Fry became president with Lynn second-in-com-mand. The Frys knew they needed to absorb as much
information about the industry as they could in as little time
“While doing our research, Mark came across the
Petroleum Equipment Institute and called,” Lynn Fry said.
“Bob Renkes returned his call, which made a huge impres-
sion on us. We weren’t members, but Bob took time from
his busy day while traveling to talk to Mark. After a couple of
years owning the business, we joined PEI and decided to get
involved. Of all the trade associations that we have belonged
to over the years, PEI stands out as an exceptional trade
Both of the Frys immersed themselves in opportunities
to learn and network. They’re involved in a 10 Group, and
Lynn Fry helped steer the creation of PEI Women.
“I got involved with the PEI Women group at the begin-
ning,” Lynn Fry said. “I was fortunate enough to be selected
for the original committee. Through that, I met a diverse and
wonderful group of women that have mentored me. I have
learned and continue to learn through this group.”
People from across the industry have taught the Frys ev-
erything from the lingo to the technical engineering behind
the products, Mark Fry said.
“I have been fortunate to have manufacturer reps that
have helped me learn the products and answer my questions
since the beginning,” he said. “Our employee team that
came with the business purchase helped us get up to speed
quickly and have helped us be successful from the ;rst day.
“People we have met at conferences and conventions
from other PEI member companies have been very helpful
to us. Sometimes that help is simply realizing that we all
share the same challenges and we can make it through the
RSSE offers the Frys the stability they wanted, but challenges are typical for any business.
“It’s frustrating at times dealing with a suffocating government system,” Lynn Fry said.
RSSE is located at 1515 Charles Drive in Redding, California.
