“We didn’t know this industry
existed until we found this com-
pany for sale,” said Lynn Fry, vice
president of RSSE Inc. in Redding,
California. “We were looking for a
technical and more recession-proof
business to purchase close to our

ground. He served four years in
the U.S. Air Force and majored in
mechanical engineering at Texas
Tech University. The business world
was nothing new to him.
During college, he started a
landscaping business. After that, he
worked for a general contractor in
Austin, Texas, and built a high-rise
of;ce building. He also worked for
the Army and Air Force Exchange
Service doing facility management
at eight Army and Air Force bases in
Northern California. But major base
closings in 1992 laid off him along
with 19 others.
So the Frys started a general
contracting business in Santa Rosa,
California, that mainly performed
tenant improvements in of;ce build-
ings. For years, business was great.
Then the Great Recession of 2008
hit the Frys and millions of other
Americans. The work dried up, and it
was time for something new that pro-
vided more stability, Lynn Fry said.
“We started looking at all kinds
of businesses — restaurants, manufacturers, C-stores — but none were
right for Mark, who is a very technical person,” Lynn Fry said. “We
found RSSE, and it was located in
