“I’m Your Average American … and I Just Bought
a Tesla.” This year’s sessions included a Q&A with Chris
Burchett, a police sergeant with the city of Pasadena, husband and father of two. Burchett, a self-described “car guy”
who is not an environmentalist and leans right politically,
said he bought a used, blue Model S from the Tesla website. When he found “the one,” he hit the purchase button.
“My wife said I couldn’t buy a $100,000 Tesla,” Burchett
said. “She didn’t tell me I couldn’t buy a $50,000 Tesla.”
He sold his Dodge Challenger to purchase the Tesla
and installed a charging station in his garage. Commuting
80 miles a day made his decision easy, Burchett said, in
addition to impressive Tesla technology, performance and
“It’s just a cool car,” he said. “I’ll always have a Tesla.”
When asked if his consumption habits at convenience
stores have changed since purchasing an EV, Burchett said
he hadn’t thought about it until being asked. He said he
doesn’t frequent C-stores now unless he’s with his kids. His
wife still drives an internal combustion engine car, he said.
