FOR THIS QUARTER’S “MEMBER Pro;le,” PEI got to know
Marshall D. Ryan, president of Uni;ed Services of
Texas Inc (UST).
Wright: How many branches does
UST have, and what do they do?
Ryan: We have four of;ces:
Southlake, Texas; Keller, Texas;
Waco, Texas; and Kansas City,
Missouri. The Southlake and
Kansas City locations provide fuel
construction services and sales for
the ;lter product offered by UST:
FuelVu LLC. The Keller location provides general contracting
services, now a separate company
named UST General Contracting
LLC. The Waco location offers
railroad signal work as a division of
UST General Contracting.
Wright: What is your background,
and how did you end up at UST?
Ryan: After serving six years in the
U.S. Air Force as an avionic techni-
cian, I started a residential remodel
company in 1981 at the age of 24 in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. I sold
that company in 1989 after hearing
about the new underground storage
tank (UST) rules EPA published in
1988. I thought the new UST rules
would generate a new and emerging
market that offered a better career
path than remaining in residential
construction. I took a job with a
national environmental company
to learn the fuel installation trade.
I basically started over in my early
30s as a laborer and trainee. After
working for that company for seven
years performing all elements of
petroleum storage tank work, I left to
purchase Uni;ed Services of Texas
(UST). UST was a small, eight-man,
family-owned company in 1998
when I arrived.
Wright: What’s the history of UST?
Ryan: UST was founded in 1991.
The majority of its revenue was
from work at DFW International
Airport. The company went through
several changes in the early years
