Many contractors I’ve worked with and I encourage a
wider best practice: showing your dedication to building
a safety culture by sending every employee involved with
excavation or trench sites through the competent person
training as part of regular education and training.
It excites me to hear about PEI members’ and other
companies’ strong safety cultures.
“We have had two workers’ comp incidents in 22 years,”
said Ron Fair, president of AEC Services Inc. “My biggest fear
“We are doing it (safety training) because it is the right
thing, not OSHA-driven, nor out of fear of their site inspec-
Bill Wise, manager of fuel installation construction at
Love’s, said states could do more to protect workers.
“I think most companies do initial training but not much
follow-up or do refresher training,” Wise said. “I would like to
see more states require a certi;cate of training being com-
pleted for people using and installing shoring, a safety or
training card being issued for persons who have completed
the training and annual recerts being issued.”
In 2018 alone, United Rentals Trench Safety partnered
with customers to train 26,682 people through its United
United Academy o;ers a six-hour Excavation Safety
Training for Competent Person (CPT) course. The classroom course is designed by professional trainers to meet
OSHA standard 1926 subpart P for excavation oversight.
The course covers soil classi;cation, sloping and benching,
timber shoring, aluminum hydraulic shoring, requirements
for protective systems, manufactured tabulated data, site-speci;c engineering, general requirements and competent
person responsibilities. Each participant receives a course
manual and certi;cate of course completion, including a
wallet card. United Rentals Trench Safety partners with customers through initial CPT training and refresher courses.
