BEAVERS: We don’t do anything with vehicle
conversions. We have companies we can refer customers to
for that, but we just don’t get involved with the vehicles.
JOURNAL: When you
crunch the numbers, do you
ever have times when you
conclude it really doesn’t
make sense for a fleet to
convert to CNG?
BEAVERS: The only time
that happens is with really small
fleets—just a few vehicles that
don’t go very many miles. For
the most part, though, the economics of CNG work out
well. A savings of $2 to $3 dollars per gallon is a pretty big
motivator that helps to make the initial investment easier
JOURNAL: Here is the million-dollar question: What
key factors have made you guys successful—the things
that somebody who is looking to get into this work should
try to emulate?
BEAVERS: I would say that
staying up to date with the industry, the technology and new
approaches to CNG stations
would be at the top of the list.
Compression is nothing new,
but different compressor man-
ufacturers continue to develop
different approaches for how
to handle it. In this business, you’re working with flammable,
pressurized gas, so you have to understand how to address the
high-pressure plumbing, the fittings and the safe handling of
the product, whatever the size or nature of the facility.
