made aware of the violation, it is usually corrected during
Improper Electrical Installations. Hundreds of new
blending dispensers were installed across Missouri in 2013.
New cabinet styles substantially changed the electrical
con;guration in these dispensers. Most require an 8-inch
sealing pipe section to enter the upper portion of the
cabinet. This is to prevent gasoline vapors from traveling
back to potential ignition sources, such as the facility’s
breaker box. These sealing devices have new requirements, including a requirement that limits conduit entry
to certain access ports which must be ;tted with a special
washer to prevent wire abrasion.
Low-voltage shielded communication wire also
cannot be used in the same conduit as high-voltage wire
leads. This has led some owners and operators to alter
their cabinets by drilling or cutting new access ports.
Doing so voids the manufacturer’s warranty and the UL
listing in some cases.
THE BIG PICTURE
Most of the violations cited in this top 10 list can be
avoided with regular visual inspections. With the exception
of meter calibration, improper dispenser electrical
installation and annual line-tightness testing, owners/
operators can correct most of the problems themselves.
The good news is that the number of violations
cited by weights and measures inspectors continues to
decline each year, even as the number of devices in use
in Missouri continues to increase. I believe this is directly
related to operators being more aware of what to look for
and taking a proactive approach to equipment inspection
