Nozzles are one of the components routinely tested
by weights and measures inspectors. The test begins
by making sure the interlock is functioning properly
when the dispenser is pressurized. If the dispenser
allows self-service card activation or requires pre-pay,
the nozzle must not open without pressurizing the hose.
The ;nal test is the automatic shutoff feature, which
closes the nozzle automatically when liquid reaches
the nozzle tip.
Manufacturers today are marking nozzles and breakaways with an expiration date—the date by which the
device should be replaced. This has been a topic of much
controversy and has led to a policy decision that weights
and measures of;cials will issue a notice of violation
only when the nozzle fails to perform or is leaking. If
a nozzle has expired, that fact is noted on the inspection
form to ensure the owner is aware that the nozzle has
reached its expiration date.
