One area in which AMPES members expect to be
particularly helpful in the coming reform period is code
compliance. Because Pemex operated as a monopoly,
it has served as a de facto regulator in some respects.
But now, new entities will be responsible for overseeing
the country’s energy sector, and regulators will be asked
to prescribe rules for all parties. Expect AMPES to be
one of the important players when those regulations are
Pemex—and Mexico’s energy sector—are changing.
The vehicles Mexicans drive and the fuel required to
power them are also changing. For example, ethanol
is being introduced in a few markets on a trial basis
and may ultimately replace methyl tertiary butyl ether
(MTBE). And given the country’s abundance of natural
gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and stations
might make sense down the road.
Mexico is poised for an energy renaissance. It matters
not what fuel is used or which company owns the station:
AMPES is committed to assisting their members as they
provide safe, efficient equipment and services to the down-
stream oil industry and motoring public.
