NEWS AND PERSPECTIVES
FROM PEI’S PRESIDENT
AS I MENTIONED in my remarks at the 2014
in Las Vegas, it is
quite an honor to
serve as the 65th PEI
By the time you read this article, the
2014 college football season will likely
be over, but as I am writing, the season
is in full stride. In fact, I spent the past
weekend in Boston at what is popularly
known as “The Game”—the annual
clash between Harvard and Yale.
Growing up in the heart of Southeastern Conference (SEC) football
and having attended a number of
other major college games over the
years, The Game was quite a different
experience for me. The glitz and
glamour of Auburn/Alabama, Notre
Dame/Michigan, Ohio State/Wisconsin
and other big contests are amazing,
and the stadiums for those games often
30,222 other fans at Harvard Stadium
for The Game, the atmosphere on the
campus, the excitement in the stands
and the effort on the ;eld from both
teams were as passionate as at any other
game I’ve ever seen.
Whatever league you are in, passion,
hard work and a love for the game are
what it takes to succeed. This is just as
true in business as it is in football. Some
large PEI companies are like the teams
in the highly visible major conferences.
Other PEI members are more like
Harvard, Yale and other Ivy League
schools—they are smaller, but they
have the same level of enthusiasm and
commitment as the bigger members.
If you work hard, love what you’re
doing and build a great team, you can
be successful. A great team is more
than a single superstar. Even the
most talented quarterback or running
back won’t be successful if he is not
surrounded by great teammates who
are well coached and working together.
The same is true for your business.
As the owner, you are the head
coach and responsible for giving your
employees the keys to success. To do
so, you have to continually invest in

them. PEI’s extensive educational
programs are one of the most valuable
investments you can make. If you
are not already doing so, I encourage
you to take advantage of the many
PEI resources that can raise the level
of your team’s expertise. Already on
the calendar for 2015 are the Young
Executives Conference (February 4-6),
the Service & Construction Managers
Conference (March 19-21) and the
PEI Women Conference (April 29-
May 1). PEI recommended practices
and exams also provide reliable
guidance on essential installation,
maintenance and service tasks.
No matter what conference you play
in, if you continue to invest in your
employees, you will win the game year
after year after year—and PEI is here
to help you do just that.
