recently, he’s converted the property’s exterior pole lights to LED.
Unlike Berman, Desai did not qualify for any state or federal
incentives, rebates or other financial benefits. But that makes his
store’s financial results even more impressive. He’s seeing $300 to
$400 per month savings on his electric bills—an even greater return
than his supplier had projected. As a result, his payback for the new
lights—which had initially been estimated at 4 ½ years—will be
more like 3 ½ years.

In the Heartland
Ricker oil Co.
LED isn’t just on the left coast. It’s everywhere, including in the
nation’s heartland. One Midwestern marketer that has found the
value of LED light is Ricker Oil Co. of Indianapolis. The chain has
50 company-owned locations plus about 60 dealer sites in Indiana.
Maintenance and Facilities Director Jared Fishback, who has
been with the company about three years, made LED one of his
first priorities. Energy savings were the initial draw, but Fishback
also was intrigued by what better lighting might do for the look of
Ricker’s stores. Now, well into the conversion program, he’s more
than pleased on both counts.
Ricker launched its LED effort at one of the chain’s higher
energy usage stores. Carrying a Marathon flag, the facility had a
T-style canopy running out over the fueling island. Because of the
brightness of the new LED fixtures, Fishback was able to completely
eliminate 12 of the 37 fixtures previously required on the site. The
$15,000 project was completed in December 2010, so Fishback
already has a full year of usage data. And the
numbers don’t lie. Energy usage savings are a
firm $500 a month. So the direct payback will
be a little over two years—less than the three
years Fishback had anticipated.
But that’s just the starting point of the
financial and business benefits. Fishback
notes that the LED parts and labor are under
warranty for two years—with a full five-year
warranty for the parts.
And he actually expects
the new units to last
even longer than that.
With those kinds
of results, Ricker is
